*As you pick up the book you notice it is bound in plain, brown leather. It wouldn't be something you would notice right away. In bold, black lettering across the front the title "Flight" is written. There doesn't seem to be any indication as to who the author may be. As you open the book, the story begins on faded, worn pages.*
I glanced upwards at the dark sky, the twinkling stars gradually fading from sight as the glow of dawn slowly made its presence known. A cool wind caressed my cheek, blowing a few strands of hair gently from my face as the outline of clouds took form, the sky turning from dark grey to a deep violet.
The cliff felt uncomfortable under my feet, its roughness reminding me of where I was bound for the moment. I turned my face east, closing my eyes and breathing in the twilight air. It was time.
I spread my wings, feeling the power within them as I beat them a few times, stirring up a few dried, cracked leaves at my feet. I opened my eyes once more, gazing towards the lightening sky, tinged pink now with purple clouds.
I glanced downwards off the cliff at the carpet of trees beneath, blanketing the earth. I spread out my arms, my face turned upwards towards the lightening sky before letting myself drop.
The wind whistled soothingly past my face as I plummeted downwards. After a moment I opened my eyes, watching the tops of the trees loom closer as adrenaline pumped through my veins before finally spreading my wings, flapping them to gain height above the earth as the sun rose over the horizon.
I rose higher to greet the dawn, the sky slowly turning from pink to a pale yellow as the clouds became tinged with gold. The wind blew past my face, calling me ever upward.
I soon broke through the clouds themselves, moisture beading on my hair and body for a moment before being blown away by the ever present wind.
A different landscape befell me. Golden clouds dotted the ground below me while the sun blazed with all its glory towards my front. I reveled in it, feeling its warmth on my skin, a welcome relief from the exhilarating rush of the wind. The sky was turning a pale blue as the sun rose higher. I spread my wings to their fullest extent, gliding over the clouds swiftly before I rolled downwards into one of them, again being beset by the cold damp before beating my wings and sailing through its top once more, surging higher and higher, my breath quickening with the exertion as the sun blazed upon me.
I folded my wings to my sides and then dove downwards, stretching out one wing to roll. Colors of gold, blue, and white spun past as I plunged downwards towards the clouds. At the last moment I spread both wings out once more, catching myself and beating them furiously before gliding once more.
As I gazed towards the sun I could only think one thing “I’ve never been so close to Heaven.â€Â
