Part One: The Dragons of Dragonfall

Forward

Over the centuries nothing has inspired more tales of glory and more flights of the imagination than the lord of all creatures; The Dragon. Through research and careful study I have managed to bring you a glimpse at some of the different types of these the most magnificent of creatures.

The Dragons of Dragonfall.

There are many subspecies of Dragon my research has uncovered. The Chromatic Dragons are evil and vindictive, while the Metallic Dragons are kind and loyal just to mention two.

For many ages of man these two subspecies have waged what is known as The Dragonfall War. What started this war I do not claim to know, it is in my humble opinion that perhaps no sage alive knows. Whether the Dragons themselves know the cause of Dragonfall is up for heated debate.

The next subspecies are the gem Dragons; amethyst, crystal, emerald, sapphire and topaz. These seem to take a neutral stance on the War and tend to appear a lot rarer than their Chromatic and Metallic cousins.

As well as the above three Dragon subspecies there are other Dragon races the wise sage should be made aware of. While the above three subspecies of Dragon are known as True Dragons the following are not. The quick witted among you may notice that these ‘False’ Dragons share many similarities to True Dragons they all miss vital characteristics all True Dragons possess.

Part Two: The Chromatics

Black
Black Dragons are cruel and quick to anger. They have been found to be highly territorial and any intrusion into their territories is likely to be met with hostilities unless the trespasser is smart. The key to surviving a Black Dragon encounter us to utilize its greed of which it possesses a grand amount.

Black Dragons nest mostly in swamps and other dismal places that most would shun. Research points us towards a possible dislike of direct sunlight as almost all Black Dragon nests have been discovered in places with thick sky cover, such as a dense canopy of trees.

Black Dragons are easily identified by two boney horns pointing forward inline with their jaw. Black Dragons utilize a highly corrosive acidic breath in combat and all those entering Black Dragon territory should be careful as even a single drop can prove to be disabling.

Blue

Blue Dragons are also very territorial, but they also show a self-loving tendency. They enjoy spending long hours waiting in ambush for unwary travelers but they spend equally long lengths of time congratulating themselves on their successes and admiring their trophies.

It is worth noting that some Black Dragons have been known to capture traveling Bards and force them to sing tales of the Dragon’s greatness. One example of this is when the tale-write Sammal Ynand was captured by the Blue Dragon Dreknazish the Mighty in his tale; ‘The Dragon and Her Bard’.

Battle reports show that Blue Dragons often circle their opponents before striking with their lighting breath. It is commonly believed that this is done as a means to intimidate a prospective foe into fleeing, or surrender. Such a thing as seeing foes flee before them can only swell the Dragon’s immense ego even more.

Blue Dragons are mostly found in deserts and other humid locations enjoying the heat of the sun upon their scales. Blue Dragons do seem to hold a particular hatred for Bronze Dragons who they attack on sight. From recorded hoards encountered after the defeat of prolific Blue Dragons such as Dreknazish the Mighty mentioned above it is commonly believed that Blue Dragons favor most gems, although sapphires seem to be a favorite.

Green
Green Dragons are mean, cruel, spiteful, rude and bad tempered. They hate goodness and purity and take a sadistic pleasure in destroying such things. Green Dragons are also highly violent, launching attacks with little, or no, provocation. Green Dragons are not easily intimidated attacking creatures of any size. This willingness to attack however should not be taken as being a weakness. If a green Dragon is unsure of its foes power it will stalk them for many days, weeks even until it feels it has judged their strengths and weaknesses. Once it knows enough about its prey the Dragon will form the most suitable plan and wait for the right moment to strike.

Green Dragons enjoy inspiring fear in their prey and all accounts of Green Dragon attacks tell them to be quick, sudden, violent and always unexpected. Against strong opponents the Dragon tends to use its natural casting ability and Chlorine Gas breath to weaken its foe before combat. Against weaker foes the Dragon will enjoy a prolonged game of cat and mouse slowly weakening its prey until a time such games no longer remain amusing.

Green Dragons have been found mostly in temperate forests like those near Solinar, but there have bee some reports of Green Dragons being found in sub-tropical and even underground environments, although such things are rare.

Red
The most well known and often encountered of all the Dragons, the Reds are the most greedy and covetous. They are obsessed with wealth and know every time in their hoard from the greatest platinum statue to the lowest copper coin. To steal from a Red Dragon is to inspire a wrath likened only to the gods themselves.
Red Dragons are unusually vain and self-confident, they consider themselves to be the superior to all other forms of life and because of this outlook they never pause to study an opponent before launching an attack. When they spot an adversary they make a sudden, snap decision whether to attack using one of their ‘perfect’ strategies (of which all Red Dragons have a number pre-prepared).

As many will know a Red Dragon’s breath is pure fire, although it has been found to be loath to use this against all, but the biggest threats lest any treasure the target may be carrying be also destroyed.

Red Dragons can be found mostly in tall volcanic mountains and consider all they can see to be theirs, including the territory of other Dragons which can often bring them into conflict with Silver Dragons. The Red Dragons seem to be the most active of all the Dragonkind in the Dragonfall War.

White
Impulsive, vicious and animalistic, White Dragons are the smallest and weakest of all the evil Chromatic Dragons. They have no foresight and consider only the now, rather than the later. They are efficient hunters however and despite their low intelligence they are as greedy and evil as all other Chromatic Dragons.

Being the smallest of Dragons sorties against them have a higher survival rate than against all other True Dragons. This leads to a lot more documented records. All White Dragons lean towards the same tactic of using their ice breath to freeze their foe and then eating them whole. As White Dragons are not intelligent enough to form better plans, and also lack the desire, they can be highly predictable foes.

White Dragons enjoy icy, cold regions like the Frozen Wastes. It is often believed by sages that there may, one have been a colony of White Dragons in the Claw Mountains although such a theory has yet to be proven. It is useful to note that due to sharing territories often tribes of Frost Giants will kill White Dragons for their meat and hide. There have also been rare reports of Frost Giants capturing White Dragons and forcing them to act as guards and hunting aids, much like we humans might use a dog. Such an alliance would form a deadly foe for even the most hardened of adventurers and this may have been the fate which befell the lost Claw Mountain Colony.
