Of Descendants and Descendancy.
By Illiani Dourana the Hoardless, Descendant of Claran’nathar the Guardian

The following seeks to explain descendancy and the maturity of blood. It is not designed as a handbook, or guild to such pursuits, but instead as an informative source for those seeking to touch on such subjects in their studies. Those who believe that they may possess draconic heritage may find the following information useful, but are advised to seek out a tutor if they wish to understand their heritage more.

Of Half-Scales and Low-Scales

When a full-blooded dragon and a humanoid produces an offspring, this offspring will so the attributes of both parent. Some will appear more like their humanoid parent, whilst others may appear more draconic. There is often no mistaking a Half-Scale, but some can remain concealed indefinably.

When reproducing with another humanoid the half-scale will produce an offspring based upon their humanoid blood rather than that of their draconic heritage. Thus a quarter-blood will be born. Should they instead produce an offspring with a full-blooded dragon the result will be a second generation of half-scales. The ambitious humanoid blood will always take dominance during mating, thus a half-scale mating with another half-scale will not produce another half-scale, but a Quarter-Scale instead. Only through full-scale mating with full-scale can produce a full-blooded dragon.

Quarter-Scales often show very little of their draconic heritage, although can prove to be potent sorcerers and will likely show emotional tendencies shown in their draconic blood. It is possible for a Quarter-Scale close to their draconic heritage to mature their blood, although we shall discuss this later.

The offspring of a Quarter-Scale will always be produced as per the Quarter-Scales’ humanoid heritage. The Quarter-Scale is presumed to be a humanoid for the purposes of mating. Thus one with elven heritage would reproduce as an elf. These offspring are known as Low-Scales because although often possessing tendencies and emotions as per their draconic heritage their blood is almost completely humanoid.

From Low-Scales Descendants are born. Sometimes referred to as Nil-Scales, or No-Bloods, such is considered an insult. Descendants may, or may not be aware of their heritage, but as their family-line continues their blood becomes thinner. Descendants are the least likely to ever be able to mature their blood. Every few generations it is possible, although rare, that a Descendant will be born with the blood of their ancestor strong enough to be able to pursue the maturity of blood.

The Maturing of Blood

Should a Scale possess enough draconic blood they may undergo a process referred to as ‘the maturing of blood’. Through this the scale seeks to awake the blood within them and take on a state more akin to their draconic ancestor. There is a common misconception between those seeking to awaken their blood and Dragon Disciples.

A Dragon Disciple is often a humanoid monk, or Loremaster who seeks to learn from their wise draconic master and thus walk further down the path to enlightenment. These Disciples do not have to possess draconic ancestry, although most do. On Gaia, it is not, unlike on other Planes, a manner in which one can mature their blood.

To begin to awaken the draconic blood within a humanoid, the humanoid must first be aware of their draconic ancestry. For Half- and Quarter-Scales this is often an easy process, most Low-Scales too are aware of their draconic ancestry. For those Descendants with enough ancestral blood to awaken this can be a difficult task. Some experience a dream in which they are a dragon, although such cases seem a rarity. More common are those who discover their ancestry through accident, or through intervention from their Ancestor (as was in my own case). If a full-scale is concerned with the offspring of, likely, a long dead mate, they may approach an Descendant should they sense their blood is true enough and that they are well-suited for life as an member of Dragonkind.

Once the Scale is aware of their heritage the first step is the Ritual of Awakening. This ritual differs from flight to flight, but most involve the Scale building themselves an egg. The exact material used to build ones egg can differ greatly, almost as much as the rituals themselves, some use pieces of real dragon eggs, others might use precious metals or jewels.

Once the egg is completed the Scale must spend a night within their egg while the full-scales involved with the ritual complete its arcane and divine side. When the Scale awakens the next day they will find their veins filled with a new vigor. Their blood will have awoken within them and they can begin the next steps into become more draconic.

The end result being an appearance to that of a humanoid dragon of their heritage’s color, this end result can take a long time to achieve, with some Scales still maturing years after their awakening ritual. As the saying goes however; “patience is a Dragons’ real magic” and this is something all Maturing Scales must learn at some point.
