A bizarre game known as Gangs & Gears turns up in Solinar and quickly gains popularity. This socially heavy and imagination-driven roleplaying game is picked up by many a geek, young and old alike. Copies of the ruleset were handed out for free on the streets by the author himself, and are easily obtained from any Gangs & Gears fan.
Gangs & Gears
Concept:
Imagine, if you will, a world in the distant future in which only humans have survived the ages. The gods never returned to Gaia, and the land's magic faded with them.
The humans developed technology like that of the gnomes and surrounded themselves with it. Streets are paved with smooth cobble. Transportation is automated with complex devices that spew pollution into the sky. Towers of stone and steel stretch as far as the eye can see.
Gangs & Gears is a game in which several players take on the role of characters in a futuristic world, meeting the goals and challenges set by the game's leader, or Planebender, in creative ways.
Mechanics:
In order to play Gangs & Gears, first you must make a character. Each character is represented by three attributes: Physical, Mental, and Social. Each of these attributes may have up to fifteen points. A starting character may allocate twelve points between the three attributes. Keep in mind that having between 0 and 1 points in any score means your character is seriously dehabilitated in that respect.
Once you have your points allocated, it's time to choose a Profession based on your character's personality or role in society. The professions are as follows:
Brute- +2 Physical
Geek- +2 Mental
Yapper- +2 Social
As your character completes adventures, the Planebender may award them with 'levels', or tiers that represent your character's power and experience. Your character starts at level 1, and with each level gained, he or she may add two attribute points.
At level 5, your character must choose an upgraded Profession based on their original Profession. Keep in mind that the benefits of an Advanced Profession do not stack with your character's original profession. The Advanced Professions are as follows:
Leader- +2 Mental, +2 Social. Available to Geek and Yapper.
Master- +2 Mental, +2 Physical. Available to Brute and Geek.
Icon- +2 Physical, +2 Social. Available to Brute and Yapper.
When your character wishes to attempt a task, they must make an Attribute Roll. This is achieved by rolling a six-sided die and adding the number to your character's appropriate attribute score. If the number is equal to or greater than the difficulty level the Planebender sets, your character successfully completes the task.
Final Thoughts:
There you have it: Now get ready to grab your gang and grind your gears in a fantasy world beyond your wildest imagination!
