The Layman’s Guide to Role-playing
Compiled by Nancy Gyrorocket

Should you possess the courage to open this tome, I warn you. Its contents are not suited to the weak of heart. Should you possess the passion to open this tome, I plead to you to abstain. Its contents are not for one who is in denial of their own heart. Should you have the willpower to open this tome, reconsider. For opening this tome is a path which once you’ve gone down, you will gain such an understanding of yourself that you will never be the same. If you live a simple life and enjoy it being simple, shut this book now. You have been warned.

Many people scoff at the mentioning of role-playing. They feel it is not worth their time nor is it of any benefit. They are wrong. For one to role-play, one must first look at oneself. You must be willing to open that closet and greet that skeleton, for role-play is looking at your innermost thoughts. The things that haunt you, that please you, that scare you, that amuse you; these are the things which you must be comfortable around. That which is you is made up from the experiences you’ve faced in your life. To deny these experiences is to deny yourself and thus claim that you do not exist.

Let us start with the simple things of role-play. Picture yourself as a poor farm boy struggling every day to get enough copper pieces to afford enough seeds for next year. The seeds are your life for without the seeds you will starve next season. How do you go about getting the seeds? Are you desperate enough to sneak into someone’s house and steal them from him, causing him to starve next season? Are you humble enough to ask for help? Are you strong enough to take them by force from your enemy? Are you wise enough to propose the community sharing all of their seeds and labor for a larger crop? Are you clever enough to know which soil produces more crops? Are you dumb enough to whine over not having them that you starve? Are you experienced enough to create a weapon and hunt for pelts to exchange for seeds? Do you know a secret ritual which causes seeds to be exceedingly fertile? These are just a few possibilities, as you delve into your own self; you are bound to come up with more. Can’t think of any? Delve deeper. Think harder.

Next we will picture the farm boy being successful. Hard work of some form has provided him with enough seeds that he is comfortable. The farm boy has earned through his labor some free time from his job. What do you do? Do you go out and socialize with others, buying dinner for all? Do you sneak around looking for things in the darkness? Do you waste all your effort gambling and end up broke? Do you go use all of your profits and become drunk and fat? There are many ways to use your spoils. Unfortunately they most often end in you being poorer than before you left your house in the first place.

You can travel faster alone, but you can go farther with friends. Some form of companionship is essential to every role-player. It is not enjoyable to always be alone. Interaction is essential to a healthy person. We all thrive on socialization. To go and run away in the hills is to avoid one’s problems. They will still be there when you climb down that hill. Face them. There are so many people out there that are lost and confused. If everyone would just take one step, one offering of help, the world would be that much better. On the other side of this coin, you must be willing to accept help when it is offered.

Life is about experiences. Do not live in just the extreme moments to be dead to the small moments. Every second counts. What will you do with it? Sleep? Cook something? Hunt? Fish? Read? Every action you take matters. Do not forget the small things. Enjoy your time because it is short, and it cannot be repeated.
