Immunities are hard to play out as believable. Especially Fear and Mind Effect immunity makes for a mind job (pun intended) when you try to manage the psychology of your character. It is rare that a monk with 20 levels or more would get pissed, agitated, desperate. Most of the time just not possible. On the other hand emotional reactions are to be played out. Seeing a kid rot to bones will most likely make Anni grit her teeth - keeping her calm is a whole lot different matter.

I know I don't play here much anymore, but I was frustrated about this sort of thing in the past, whether it be through my DMing or through Ætheos - where evil or darkness was never really taken seriously.

Admittedly it probably didn't help that she was a rather social Vampire and at times predictable which could create a few shoulders shrugging at her presence.

However, due to reasons I do not fully understand, evil was taken with a grain of salt, and I SUSPECT one reason may be is because there was a distinct lack of permanent consequences towards characters and the environment.

It was rare to witness the world actually changing post-events. Should an undead scourge break free from the soil and attack, they were defeated and the very next day, the South Plains tree was once again infested with bored heroes after the next frequent server reset.

I know all the DMs try hard to create meaningful events, so it really is up to the player to really immerse into the surroundings and actually breathe your character, not just click it around and type one-liners.

One thing is certain, you start taking away your coddling of the players and their safety, and start applying negative curses and perm-killing off the ones who make bad judgements in events, and people will likely start straightening up and going "Woh, wait a minute, I could lose my character if I don't pay attention, put some effort in and take things seriously."

The other day a assassin monk appeared and I had Jarl act very cautious and a bit fearful of her... he even tried to sneak up to help Elissril when she was being held hostage by the assassin. The assassin heard him approach, so he backed off and acted all meh'' about the scenario

Now, it appeared like he was meh... but I did mention he was still acting cautious.

There are certain situations I think where a pc is allowed to act all 'meh' and that is when they realise there is nothing they can do. Jarl's life wasn't nessisarily in danger, the assassin was after someone else and he could do nothing at all to help really and he knew it. Fleeing was pointless as if the assassin wanted him dead he would be, so he stuck around to see the outcome.
