He was a killer before he was even born. His mother was the target of his fathers assassination job before they even knew each other.

When the time came, he just couldn't do it. The loveliness of the woman, the innocense.. it captured him in a way he just didn't expect and he fell in love with her then and there. The woman he meant to kill was taken aback by the softness of the man and it captured her heart as well.

Eventually they married and had Jarl. His father never questioned why nothing came of the fact he failed in his mission. He figured he was to good for them to punish him, they needed him and so they just let it go.

His mother told Jarl when he was older all about what happened that night. She told him because Jarl had just dumped his first girlfriend and had really upset her. His mother was trying to show him that true love can conquer all, and to give her another chance. Of course, Jarl didn't take her back anyway and to the disappointment of his mother, time went on.

Jarl eventually questioned his father on why he did what he did, and his father told him a story.

"Son, life is about survival. In order to survive, you must be willing to kill. Doing so may seem cruel, but eventually you'll have to. You cannot rely on others to keep you safe and protect you, for a day may come and their protection will fail you and then where you will be? At the mercy of another and you'll likely not receive it. Kill, learn how to kill well, and you'll never have to worry about such things again. It will become so natural to you, you'll never fear it, others will fear you, knowing that killer instinct exists in you. They will think twice about wether or not to chance moving on you. The power over your destiny in life will be yours my son."

Jarl thought about this and asked; "But why kill for money? Why not just kill bad things like goblins and orcs?" His father smiled and patted him on the head and answered plainly; "Cause then people will not fear you. When you're feared, you know what to expect. You know not to sit comfortable and you know to watch your back. But at least you control that and at least if they do decide to come after you, you'll have that edge, that /fear/ to work off of and that will cause them to make mistakes against you. Trust is an illusion that can be deadlier then any blade my son. The moment you let your Guard down to trust another could potentially be the moment you hand your life to that person. How easy is it to stab a man in the back that is willing to turn it away from you?"

Jarl once again pondered this and asked; "You trust mom and me. You turn your back to us all the time, and I notice it with nieghbours too." His father laughed and messed his sons hair amusedly, and replied; "No my son, I do not. It may seem so, but I have very much learned to have eyes in the back of my head, to sleep lightly and to always be prepared. I do not believe you or your mother would kill me, but I'll never give you the chance either."

Jarl nodded and contemplated his fathers words. For some reason, the knowledge that his father was a killer didn't seem to bother him. He jabbered on with him about little details of his profession, asked about why he was not in jail for killing, and his father only replied that he was never caught, and even though everyone suspected him, they couldn't do a thing about it legally. He asked more about those he worked for, but his father wasn't ready to explain it all just yet.

Later that week, Jarl had come home bloody. Both his father and mother beame instantly worried and demanded to know what had happened. Jarl explained that he had killed the local bully. He had had enough of him pushing him around, and so he put his fingers in his eyes and pushed until he was dead. His father was proud, but his mother was fearful but she knew she couldn't act on it and stayed quiet.

They packed light, quickly and moved away that night. They knew the town would want Jarl to hang for what he did, even though he was only 13. That was close enough to manhood for them and he had killed.

For now, until they could figure out where to go, his father brought them to his guild he worked for. Explained the situation to them and the guild let them stay there. For awhile, things went well. Jarl received training in their arts and they were impressed with him from the get go. Jarl seemed to have a talent for the roguish arts and the lack of morals to use them.

His training was intense. For years he lived in constant fear of being beaten whenever he rested. One of the rules of the guild was, 'If you are caught unprepared, you are to be beaten.' So he was always paranoid for a long while during his training, until he got good enough that the leaders left him alone, and the weaker members rarely succeeded anymore.

He was also never given food or money by any member of the guild. He was unprovided for and forced to steal what he had to, to survive. And for weeks, he had to live in the sewers and survive off whatever he could find down there.

To be short, till he was 20, his life was anything but pleasent.

Several years went by and eventually Jarl was brought to a room. He was told this was for special training into a higher art. Jarl couldn't wait and proceeded with his escort to where he found his father and mother tied to a chair. Jarl was shocked at this.. and didn't understand. He wasn't so much as fearful suddenly, but he was anxious and worried. "What is this?" He asked.

"This is your test Jarl. To put it simply you are going to punish your father for failing his mission." This confused Jarl, as far as he knew, his father never failed. "What job did he fail?" He questioned curiously. "He failed to kill your mother, before you were even born." The man returned calmly. It clicked in him now, the story his mother told. "But why my mother?"

"Because she was never meant to live, and we want you to finish what he was meant to do. Prove to us, you're better then he is."

Jarl looked to his gagged parents. His mother was crying and scared. She looked at him with pleading eyes. His father was watching Jarl intensely, as if judging him as a man. He wanted Jarl to do this and to treat it as a lesson in life. To never make the same mistake he did and be the better man. Jarl wondered though.. and thought 'If my mother wasn't meant to live, then neither was I, are they going to kill me?'

Jarl glanced to his dagger in his belt holster and took it out and once again looked to them both. His mother was crying even more. Muffling screams of protest to her son, begging him not to do this. But Jarl new better, he knew very well what would occur if he didn't do it. They would all die, and die horribly. He dismissed the thought that they would kill him after this, after all, he was one of thier best low ranked rogues. He approached his mother and slit her throat quickly without a second thought and watched her eyes stare at him in disbelief and pity, sadness and sorrow. She died. He then looked at his father, to which his father winked at his son approving and showing his son that he was proud of him, he had truly become the better man. Jarl slit his throat. He died.

Now, a few years later, he was sent out to Solinar. He was not told why, but just to go and live his life for now. On his way, he happened to meet a lovely young lady named Cecily. He had seen her many times before, but he never had the nerve to talk to the woman. Till now. He walked up to her unconcious form laying on the street, thanks to her father. He would kill her father later, but for now, he picked her up, and carried her off.

And this is where his story in Solinar begins.

P.S. If a DM would pick this up and run with it, that would be awsome. :)
